Securities operations guide

SWIFT custody and securities message types

Understand the core holdings, transaction, settlement, corporate-action and collateral messages used between investment managers, custodians, CSDs and triparty agents.

Holdings and transaction reporting

SWIFT MTISO 20022Purpose
MT535semt.002Statement of holdings and securities balances
MT536semt.017Posted securities transaction statement
MT537semt.018Pending securities transaction statement

Securities settlement

MT540–MT543 cover receive/deliver and free/against-payment instructions and map to sese.023. MT544–MT547 confirm those four settlement directions through sese.025. MT548 reports processing or settlement status through sese.024.

Corporate actions

MT564–MT568 cover notifications, elections, movement confirmations, status advice and narratives. ISO 20022 separates these flows across seev.031–seev.041. The exact target depends on the MT function and event context, so a message-number-only mapping is a starting point rather than a final market-practice decision.

Collateral operations

The collateral message viewer supports MT503–MT507 for margin calls, proposals, substitutions, exposure reporting and responses, plus MT527, MT558 and MT569 for triparty collateral instructions, status and exposure reporting. Conversion targets use the corresponding colr business messages.

Viewer, validator and converter coverage

The viewer labels qualified ISO 15022 fields and exposes security identifiers, quantities, dates, accounts and narratives. The validator checks the FIN envelope and required message-family fields. The converter creates editable ISO 20022 business-document XML and reports assumptions requiring market-specific review.

Market-practice review is required. Custody mappings depend on message function, sequence structure, event type, CSD rules, account model and bilateral agreements. Validate output against the exact ISO schema and receiving profile.
